ATTR, Genetics and Genetics Counselling
Living with hereditary ATTR can bring a lot of questions — not just about your own health, but about your family too.
What does it actually mean to have a genetic diagnosis?
Where do you go to get tested?
What happens when you receive the results?
And perhaps one of the hardest questions of all… how do you talk to your children, siblings or other family members about it?
We’re inviting you to join us for an informal, interactive online education session focused on Hereditary ATTR, genetic testing and genetic counselling.
Our speakers
Madeline Calder – Genetic Counsellor
Madeline is an Australian genetic counsellor based at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital within the Sydney Local Health District. She works with patients and families to help make complex genetic information easier to understand and navigate.
Madeline also works with the Institute of Precision Medicine and Bioinformatics on medical research, with a particular interest in making genetic testing faster, easier and more accessible through GPs and local healthcare networks.
Dr Alison McLean – Clinical Geneticist
Dr Alison McLean is an Australian clinical geneticist based at Royal Prince Alfred and Westmead Hospitals. She works with individuals and families to understand whether health conditions may have a genetic cause and uses specialised genetic testing to help provide answers.
Working closely with genetic counsellors, Alison supports patients not only with the medical side of genetic testing, but also with the emotional and practical questions that come with it.
She also teaches medical students at the University of Sydney and conducts award-winning research, with a strong focus on ensuring new genetic technologies are used safely, ethically and in the best interests of patients.
Whether you have already had genetic testing, are thinking about being tested, have recently received a diagnosis, or simply want to understand what it could mean for your family — this session is for you.
Come along, listen, ask questions and hear from experts who understand that genetic testing isn’t just about genes and results — it’s about people, families, emotions and sometimes difficult conversations.
